Chronicles of the Motley Force: Gargantuan Brain Spiders

11-10-1995 (Heather, James, Gary, Glenn, Rich)

We find a portcullis, which we raise and prop up with great difficulty. Garry, crawling under it, sees a second portcullis some ways away, but a pit separates the two. Garry attempts to cross it on the narrow walkway wihich extends between them, but becomes strangely dizzy and falls into the pit. After rescuing him, we decide against any further attempts.

We then find a large room with a dais and a tree, which turns out to be a treant. Karnov and Garry kill the treant. I approach the dais, but am rooted to the spot when I stand on it. We also see a table close by with a book, a candle, and a goblet of wine on it. When I attempt to read the Book of Talislar (which is bound in red dragon hide), its pages turn by themselves, revealing that it is about me! I am shown as the heir to the throne and rulership of an elven city of great splendor. Statues of me adorn this city, whose whereabouts are unknown. Windrush takes the candle of invocation, and Garry drinks the wine, which ages him 45 years.

The next room contains four iron gargoyles, which are immune to lightning, psionic blast, and magic missile, no doubt among other things. Their breath weapon burns up all of Ulthar's scrolls. He then attacks with the Rod of Thorseth. When Ulthar's opponent is down to one hit point, Ulthar misses him with a 1(!), but Karnov executes the coup de grace.

In another room, I summon an invisible stalker to get a bag of holding from a table with a red glow shining down on it from above. The bag contains a scroll of protection from demons and a Rope of Climbing. I give the rope to Karnov. There is also a staff/spear, which I give to Garry.

Later, in a corridor, steel walls extrude a double of Garry in living steel with blades for arms. Windrush rolls 20, then 1, then 100% and destroys it instantly with a crushing blow. Eventually, we come to the center of the complex. On one side, we see a long room with niches along the walls and an altar at the far end; on the other, massive double doors. We go to the altar room first. Making our way down the room, Ulthar moves toward the niches, and I ask Rich what he sees. "Just the 64-hit-dice gargantuan psionic brain spiders", he replies, and we all have a good laugh... until he follows up with "roll for initiative". The spiders attack us, and Karnov is bitten and poisoned. The evil creature sucks the life from him (accompanied by enthusiastc sound effects from Rich). Ulthar, having detected psionics, engages and destroys two of the spiders as his remaining comrades kill the third. After raising Karnov and healing ourselves, we enter the main room. Immediately we enter, we are stricken with an arthritic virus. Inside, we see Infreata, an ancient red dragon, who tells us how much she enjoyed destroying the two previous parties foolish enough to enter her lair. Unsure of what to do, Karnov attacks the dragon, who literally blows him away with her breath weapon (30d10+30; the single attack did 184 hp). After negotiation, Infreata allows us to live if we promise to destroy an enemy of hers: Dernameth the lich, our own arch-enemy! In exchange, she gives us items to help in the deed. Ulthar has the Staff of the Magi restored to him, Karnov is given full plate armor +5, Windrush gets a Ring of Three Wishes, and Garry a golden axe (which is an artifact). (A strange phrase found among the notes: "Latron Smod".) All characters are granted a level outright for their trouble.

[There is a separate page of notes labeled "Callahan's 11.10.95" that was apparently written down after the formal portion of the game ended:]
